MDES Accelerates ThaiLLM Development to Power Homegrown AI and Boost Digital GDP

Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DE) is advancing the development of a national artificial intelligence model, Thai Large Language Model (ThaiLLM), as a key driver of the country’s digital economy and technological sovereignty.

Speaking at the launch of the ThaiLLM infrastructure project, organized by the Big Data Institute (BDI), the ministry’s permanent secretary emphasized that AI is no longer just a supporting tool but a critical digital infrastructure for both present and future development. ThaiLLM, designed to deeply understand the Thai language and cultural context, is positioned as a strategic national asset.

The initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign technologies, cut long-term costs, and strengthen national data security—particularly for organizations handling sensitive information. It also addresses the complexity of the Thai language, including regional dialects and specialized vocabulary, enabling more accurate and locally relevant AI applications.

The ministry projects Thailand’s Digital GDP to grow by 4% in 2026, reinforcing the digital economy as a key engine of national growth. To support widespread adoption, DE plans to launch a major public access program offering five million one-year AI usage rights. This will include access to leading global AI platforms as well as ThaiLLM, helping citizens and businesses integrate AI into daily operations.

The initiative is also expected to accelerate the refinement of ThaiLLM through broader real-world usage, fostering innovation and strengthening Thailand’s position in the global AI landscape while ensuring sustainable and inclusive digital transformation.
