International News Agencies Report Thai Police Rescue Chinese Student from Virtual Kidnapping in Thailand

Various international news agencies from Malaysia, Japan, and China reported on the successful operation by the Royal Thai Police to rescue a Chinese student who had fallen victim to a virtual kidnapping orchestrated by a transnational scam syndicate.

The Royal Thai Police held a press conference on 3 June 2026, announcing that officers had safely rescued the student after a transnational scam gang, posing as law enforcement authorities, allegedly threatened and manipulated her remotely, isolated her from outside communication, and coerced her into staging her own abduction in Thailand. The gang subsequently demanded approximately USD 390,000 in ransom from her family in Hong Kong.

The operation was carried out in close coordination with the Hong Kong Police, following reports that the victim had gone missing in Hong Kong and had been manipulated into traveling to Thailand alone. Authorities from both sides will continue to cooperate closely to expand the investigation and dismantle the transnational online scam network behind the case.

The Royal Thai Police noted that virtual kidnapping is an emerging global threat in which scammers use fear, impersonation, and isolation tactics to coerce victims into following their instructions and extort money from family members, rather than carrying out an actual physical abduction. The public is advised not to trust threats demanding money transfers or instructions to travel alone.

Thai nationals and foreign residents in Thailand who have relevant information are encouraged to contact the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Centre Hotline at 1599, which is available 24 hours a day.
