Response regarding a statement made by the Spokesperson of the Cambodian Ministry of Defence in relation to the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC)

The JIC takes note of a statement made by the Spokesperson of the Cambodian Ministry of Defence during a briefing to the ASEAN Observer Team in Cambodia (AOT-KH) and wishes to clarify the following key points:

1. Thailand remains committed to resolving border issues peacefully and through mechanisms agreed upon by both sides. Thailand attaches importance to all relevant bilateral mechanisms, including the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), the General Border Committee (GBC), and other mechanisms as agreed upon by both sides, with the goal of promoting overall border security, including undertaking survey and demarcation efforts as mutually agreed.

2. The claim that Thailand has used force to occupy Cambodian territory is a unilateral accusation that does not reflect the facts. Thailand rejects this accusation, as it has consistently affirmed that its actions are in accordance with the Joint Statement agreed by both sides on 27 December 2025, which includes measures to de-escalate tensions and maintain stability along the border.

3. Thailand is ready to support the work of the JBC when the environment is conducive to such cooperation. Survey and demarcation efforts require trust, ensuring the safety of officials from both sides, and respect for the related technical processes. Therefore, it is crucial to avoid communicating these issues in a way that could create misunderstandings within the international community.

4. Thailand cooperates transparently with ASEAN observer teams. Thailand continues to be willing to provide information and facts, and facilitate the work of the ASEAN observer team, so that assessments of the situation are based on complete, comprehensive and verifiable information.

5. Lasting peace must be based on facts, not false allegations. Thailand believes that building mutual trust can only be achieved through adherence to joint agreements, respect for bilateral mechanisms, and avoiding disseminating unilateral allegations that have not been jointly verified or proven.

The JIC calls on all parties to utilize existing mechanisms to resolve issues constructively, so that survey and demarcation efforts can proceed safely, transparently and for the benefit of the people of both countries, leading to lasting peace and stability in the Thai-Cambodian border area.
