Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), in partnership with private sector, has transformed used plastic packaging into 150 “eco-friendly chairs,” reinforcing Bangkok’s vision of becoming a model city for waste separation under the “No Mixed Waste” approach.
The chairs were produced from plastic waste that citizens helped separate at source during BMA-led events, including the 2025 Red Cross Fair. Under the “No Mixed Waste” initiative, waste is separated into three categories: organic waste, general waste, and recyclables. Recyclable plastics were processed using SCGC technology, with around 200 used food containers converted into one chair.
This initiative recycled approximately 9,000 kilograms of plastic waste and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 17,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent, comparable to planting 770 trees. Bangkok Governor noted that Bangkok generates nearly 10,000 tonnes of waste per day, with disposal costs far exceeding revenue from waste fees, highlighting the importance of recycling and circular economy solutions.
The collaboration demonstrates how effective waste separation at source can turn waste into valuable resources, promote public participation, and support sustainable urban waste management in Bangkok.
