AOT pushes Suvarnabhumi expansion worth 210bn baht

Airports of Thailand (AOT) is advancing a major expansion programme at Suvarnabhumi Airport, with total investment exceeding 210 billion baht, covering the development of a South Terminal and a 12-billion-baht East Expansion, pending cabinet approval.

Paweena Jariyathitipong, (ปวีณา จริยฐิติพงศ์) President of AOT, said the company has comprehensively revised Suvarnabhumi Airport’s master plan to address inefficiencies in previous investment approaches. Rather than committing to a single large-scale investment of more than 200 billion baht, AOT has restructured the South Terminal project into three phased developments to better align with passenger demand and reduce financial and interest burdens.

Under the revised plan, Phase 1 will focus on ground improvement and preparatory works. As the airport was originally built on swamp land prone to subsidence, this phase will concentrate on strengthening the foundation and planning essential infrastructure. Key elements include land improvement, terminal design, and preparation for road connections, particularly along the Bang Na–Trat route. This phase is expected to take approximately two and a half years, followed by construction of connecting roads and utility systems.

Phase 2 will involve construction of the first half of the South Terminal, increasing capacity by 30 million passengers per year. When combined with existing facilities, Suvarnabhumi Airport’s total capacity would rise to 100 million passengers annually within five years.

Phase 3 will complete the remaining South Terminal works and include construction of a fourth runway, raising the airport’s long-term capacity to 120 million passengers per year over a 10–12-year timeframe.

According to AOT, the phased approach is designed to ensure sustainable growth, efficient capital management, and readiness to accommodate Thailand’s long-term aviation demand.
