The Ministry of Interior is moving forward with plans to revive the Wang Prachan–Wang Kelian Free Flow Zone as a pilot project aimed at boosting the Thailand–Malaysia border economy while maintaining high security standards. The initiative focuses on revitalizing border markets and encouraging local trade and tourism in a controlled and safe environment.
Under the proposed pilot, cross-border movement would be allowed on weekends during limited hours, with pedestrian travel only and the use of Temporary Border Passes linked to immigration databases. Authorities will closely monitor daily movement and community impacts to ensure balanced economic benefits and security.
The project is being developed through close cooperation between Thai security agencies, Satun Province, and Malaysian counterparts, with diplomatic coordination led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Overall, the Free Flow Zone is expected to strengthen local livelihoods, promote cross-border connectivity, and support sustainable economic growth while firmly upholding national sovereignty.
