Laos, Thailand and Malaysia have taken a major step toward deeper regional energy integration with the signing of a new electricity transmission agreement under the Laos–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore Power Integration Project, reinforcing ASEAN’s commitment to a more connected and resilient regional power system.
The signing ceremony was held on 14 January at the headquarters of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) in Bangkok, attended by senior executives and government representatives from the three countries. The agreement allows the cross-border transmission of 100 megawatts of electricity from Laos to Singapore through the existing transmission networks of Thailand and Malaysia, under a two-year contract period.
This second phase of the project represents tangible progress in the ASEAN Power Grid vision, which aims to strengthen energy security, optimise shared resources, and support sustainable economic growth through regional electricity interconnection and trade.
The agreement was signed by representatives of Electricite du Laos, EGAT and Malaysia’s Tenaga Nasional Berhad, and witnessed by senior officials from the energy ministries of Thailand, Laos and Malaysia.
The project goes beyond electricity trading. It is a strategic initiative to enhance regional energy connectivity, improve system reliability and demonstrate ASEAN’s ability to deliver complex multilateral infrastructure projects. By using existing transmission infrastructure, the project increases efficiency while reducing investment costs and environmental impacts.
The project is widely regarded as a milestone in ASEAN energy cooperation and a practical model for future cross-border power trading, supporting long-term regional stability, energy sustainability and economic integration.
