TAT launches “Chiang Mai Night Market,” elevating Lanna charm into a nighttime tourism landmark

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) held a press conference about the launching of the “Chiang Mai Night Market,” showcasing Thai identity and Lanna culture through  two of Chiang Mai’s signature walking streets—Tha Phae Walking Street (ถนนคนเดินทา่ แพ) and San  Kamphaeng Walking Street (ถนนคนเดินสันกาํ แพง). The initiative aims to position Chiang Mai as a  vibrant nighttime destination that blends culture, art, creativity, and modern technology, while  driving creative tourism and sustainable growth from early 2026.

On 9 January 2026, TAT, in collaboration with Chiang Mai Province, officially announced the event  under the concepts Tha Phae Remix Chiang Mai Remake and San Kamphaeng Remix Chiang Mai Remake. The project is designed to add new color to nighttime tourism and stimulate travel during the beginning  of the year.

The event builds on Chiang Mai’s strong cultural assets as a popular destination for both Thai and international visitors. Its walking streets—long known for reflecting Lanna lifestyles, local crafts, food, and community creativity—have been enhanced with contemporary elements through light  art, color, and digital technology to create distinctive cultural experiences.

TAT stated that walking streets are key spaces for presenting Thai soft power in a tangible way.  The “Chiang Mai Night Market” provides a platform for local artists, entrepreneurs, and communities to showcase their potential, while offering meaningful and authentic experiences beyond conventional commercial tourism.

In addition, the event supports the creative economy and helps distribute tourism income from the city center to surrounding communities. It also strengthens Chiang Mai’s image as a cultural tourism destination of international standing and reinforces the role of walking streets as quality attractions that seamlessly connect art, culture, and local ways  life—driving sustainable growth for Thailand’s tourism sector.
