Thailand, Lao PDR and Malaysia Advance LTMS-PIP Phase 2, Strengthening ASEAN Power Grid Integration

Thailand, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and Malaysia have strengthened regional energy cooperation through the signing of an Energy Wheeling Agreement under the Lao PDR–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore Power Integration Project Phase 2 (LTMS-PIP 2.0). The agreement marks a significant step forward in expanding cross-border electricity trading and transmission, reinforcing regional energy security and advancing the ASEAN Power Grid initiative.

LTMS-PIP Phase 2 builds upon the success of the initial phase by increasing cross-border electricity trading capacity from 100 megawatts to a maximum of 200 megawatts over a two-year period. Electricity generated in the Lao PDR and Malaysia will be transmitted to Singapore through the power grid systems of Thailand and Malaysia. This highlights Thailand’s strategic role as a regional power transmission hub, supported by robust infrastructure, advanced system management, and strong technical readiness.

The project enhances grid flexibility, supports the regional energy transition toward cleaner energy sources, and promotes a more interconnected and resilient ASEAN power system. LTMS-PIP Phase 2 represents a concrete milestone in multilateral electricity trading and underscores ASEAN’s collective commitment to sustainable energy development and long-term regional cooperation.
