Thailand, Laos and Malaysia have strengthened regional energy cooperation by signing an electricity transmission agreement under the Laos–Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore Power Integration Project (LTMS-PIP), reinforcing ASEAN’s commitment to a more interconnected and resilient power system.
Signed in Bangkok, the agreement enables the cross-border transmission of 100 megawatts of electricity from Laos to Singapore through the existing transmission networks of Thailand and Malaysia over a two-year contract period. This marks the second phase of the LTMS-PIP and represents a concrete step forward in realizing the ASEAN Power Grid vision, which aims to enhance energy security, optimize regional energy resources, and support sustainable economic growth through electricity interconnection and trade.
Officials emphasized that the project goes beyond electricity trading, serving as a strategic initiative to strengthen regional energy connectivity, improve power system reliability, and demonstrate ASEAN’s capacity to implement complex multilateral infrastructure projects. By using existing transmission infrastructure, the project is expected to increase efficiency while reducing investment costs and environmental impacts.
The agreement is widely seen as a milestone for ASEAN energy cooperation and a practical model for future cross-border power trading. It also highlights Laos’ growing role as a regional electricity exporter and its broader efforts to promote regional integration and long-term energy sustainability across ASEAN.
