The Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Commerce has officially registered the “Phuket Seven-Color Lobster” as a Geographical Indication (GI), highlighting Thailand’s strength in premium seafood production and its ability to transform local marine resources into high-value products for the global market. The registration strengthens Phuket’s position as a key origin of distinctive GI products and reinforces Thailand’s image as a leading destination for gastronomy tourism rooted in quality, authenticity, and sustainability.
The Phuket Seven-Color Lobster is distinguished by the unique marine environment of the Andaman Sea, characterized by rich biodiversity, optimal salinity, and constant water circulation driven by tidal movements. These natural conditions contribute to the lobster’s firm muscle structure, sweet and dense meat, and vibrant coloration. Combined with traditional aquaculture practices and locally sourced natural feed, the lobster develops superior texture, rich flavor, and visual appeal, making it highly valued by chefs and consumers in premium dining markets worldwide.
The GI registration provides systematic protection of the product’s reputation and origin while enhancing consumer confidence in its authenticity and quality. Recognized as the “Foie Gras of the Sea,” the Phuket Seven-Color Lobster has gained international acclaim and has been featured in high-end culinary settings. Through continuous quality control systems and collaboration with relevant agencies, Thailand aims to further promote premium seafood products, support sustainable coastal communities, and strengthen the country’s role as a global leader in high-quality food and gastronomy tourism.
