Thailand Urged to Integrate Nature into Economic Planning to Drive Green Growth

The World Bank has encouraged Thailand to adopt Natural Capital Accounting (NCA), a framework designed to measure the economic value of natural resources and integrate them into national development planning. The approach aims to help policymakers balance economic growth with environmental sustainability while unlocking new opportunities for long-term prosperity.

Speaking at Earth Jump 2026, Melinda Good highlighted Thailand’s forests, watersheds, and natural landscapes as strategic assets that contribute to economic resilience, productivity, and competitiveness. NCA helps quantify the benefits provided by nature, including flood protection, water management, agricultural productivity, and tourism development, enabling governments to make more informed investment decisions.

The World Bank is working with the National Economic and Social Development Council to identify future growth industries where Thailand holds a competitive advantage, including sustainable agriculture, health and wellness, eco-tourism, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing.

Officials emphasized that nature should be viewed not only as an environmental resource but also as a source of innovation and economic opportunity. By integrating natural capital into national planning, Thailand can strengthen sustainability, enhance competitiveness, and support a more resilient and inclusive economy for future generations.
